TEAL

Date: 2015
Duration: 5 minutes
Instrumentation: Two clarinets

The guiding organizational principle of Teal for two Bb clarinets is canon, as the two clarinet parts are linked canonically throughout much of the piece. While the canonic relationship is at times strict, more commonly the echoing voice, whether taken by Clarinet 1 or Clarinet 2, is slightly varied. The bubbling character of the rather minimalist opening with its fragmented melodic shards consisting almost exclusively of small note values and by the consistently short delay between the canonic leader and its follower pervades much of the piece. Momentum is built dynamically, texturally, and by frequent transitions between the idiosyncratic high and low registers of the clarinet. The slow final portion of the piece is essentially a reduced version of the entire piece, an extracted microcosm of sorts. Teal is a companion piece to Hypallage, being built on the same principal theme.
Teal was commissioned by clarinetist Yasmin Flores.
